Help with Choosing
Choosing Your Baby's Nappies

If you're new to washable cloth nappies the choices on offer can be confusing. How do you begin to choose what is right for your baby from the different types, and the huge variety available?

The Buzzness aims to make using cloth nappies simpler and easier. One of the ways we do this is by evaluating many different nappies and wraps, but only offering what we feel are the very best ones to our customers. I know from experience how frustrating it is to buy an attractive nappy system when pregnant, only to find it leaves red marks on your baby's tender skin, and leaks after only two hours. Avoiding problems like these involves comparing design features, looking at fabric composition, listening to lots of peoples experiences, and doing lots and lots of trials on babies! I am fortunate to have had both a son and daughter to test nappies on, and my son has extremely sensitive skin, which makes him a very critical tester. The fact is that what feels softest to an adult isn't necessarily what will prove most comfortable on a baby; for example, you can have the softest fabric wrap in the world, but if it has fastenings that dig in to babies' tummies or legs it will not be satisfactory, never mind comfortable. I have spent many hours each day, for many months, considering the various nappies available from around the world, to bring our customers a select international range of the best products.

Essentially we have already chosen the best of the leading systems available for you - you can then choose which of our nappy systems best suits you, your baby, and your lifestyle. You do not have to restrict yourself to one type of nappy, wrap or liner. Mix and match - you may find, as I do, that you prefer a different system for daytime to that which you use at night.

How many Nappies?

For fulltime use you will need about 24 absorbent nappies for a newborn, 18 for an older baby. Even if you only intend to use cloth nappies part-time, it is useful to have at least 12 nappies so that you have enough to make up a full load for washing.

Most people find that they need a minimum of 4 wraps in each size.

Fuzzi Bunz and Stuffables need to be washed after every change, because your baby's wee passes through the fleece into the nappy. Therefore if you want to use these full-time you will need about 18 Small size for a newborn and 12 per size for an older baby (usually only 2 further sizes are required), as well as 18-24 absorbent inserts or prefolds to go inside. If using Fuzzi Bunz or Stuffables only at night you will need at least 2 per size, plus inserts.
